The RG-42 hand grenade was developed as a defense grenade and replaced from 1942 the more complex RGD -33 hand grenades.
The name stands for "Ruschnaya Granata obratsa 42 goda", which means "Hand grenade after pattern 1942".
The grenade contained a 200 gram TNT charge and weighed a total of about 500 grams. The RG-42 could be thrown 35 to 40 meters and had an explosion radius of about 10 meters.
The RG-42 was used with a UZRGM hand grenade detonator, which was also used on other types of hand grenades. From 1954, the RG-42 was replaced by the RGD-5 in the Russian military and later in the Warsaw Pact, but until the late
1980s stored as a reserve.
