The PFM-1 mine is a Russian mine and is also called butterfly mine.
The Russian name is ПФМ-1 and it was developed in the Soviet Union as a fast, exact copy of the american BLU-43 / B mine.
The mines can be dropped by airplanes and helicopters, but also land-based artillery and mine throwing systems.
The PFM-1 is filled with 37 g of liquid explosive and is triggered by a pressure fuse.
Since the PFM-1 has no self-destructive mechanism, these mines are a significant problem in the mined areas like in Afghanistan.
The PFM-1S provides a self-starter mechanism, which is available 24 hours after the mine has been dropped.
